Kansas City, Mo. - The Trump administration’s attack on the immigration status of potentially hundreds of students enrolled at public universities in Missouri is the latest in a series of executive actions targeting immigrants and academic institutions. International students form vital communities at our universities, become policymakers and business leaders solidifying U.S. relations abroad, provide a global perspective to other students, and more.
The ACLU of Missouri issued the following statement:
“The unannounced and unjustified termination of immigrant student status is a disturbing, unlawful, and unconstitutional policy from an overbearing and overreaching government. Due process is foundational to our free society and provides every person a fair chance to defend themselves from arbitrary, punitive actions by the federal government.
“The consequences of these cruel actions extend far beyond the disruption of the impacted students’ education; International students enrich our communities with diverse perspectives and innovative ideas while contributing to our state’s educational and economic output. A students’ education should not be taken away so that a government can add numbers to a deportation count.”
