The ACLU of Missouri filed a lawsuit against the Missouri Commission on Human Rights (MCHR) for failing to protect Missourians from sex-based discrimination at work. Lawson made a claim with the Human Rights Commision in 2015 that Dollar General discriminated against him because of his transgender identity. Lawson had requested that he be addressed using male pronouns and be allowed to use the male restrooms. He was denied because the human resources department claimed that Lawson's department had been instructed not to use male or female pronouns and that he would be reprimanded if he used the men's restroom.

On August 9, 2018, the investigation was closed because it was determined that MCHR lacked jurisdiction because sexual orientation is not protected by the Missouri Human Rights Act.

The ACLU filed the lawsuit in September, citing that Lawson made no reference to his sexual orientation.
